I just discovered that the Folsom Police Mounted Patrol is hosting an Equine Chllenge at the Dan Russell Arena this weekend, May 5 and 6.

May 5, Search and Rescue units other and non sworn persons and their horses will compete in events and a timed event at the Dan Russell arena.

May 6, Sworn police officers and their horses will compete in the same events and timed events.

This is FREE to watch and begins around 9 AM both days with the timed event being after Noon.

Many events will use the back paddocks of the arena and the best viewing of the timed events will be in the rodeo grandstands.

Sounds exciting.

It seems like every year something comes up and we can't go. 2 years ago we got there pretty late. All we saw was a horse canter into the center of the ring and then everyone walked out of the fairgrounds.

Seems like it would be a lot of fun to go watch.

I went!

The non sworn peace officers were there for competition today.

the timed event--the fastest score was 1:58.

The event started with a lap around the arena, then jumping into a water filled ditch. After navigating the end of the ditch, traveling up a short but steep embankment, then turn around and back up thru an L shaped obstacle. After that run forward, thru a serpentine ( one horse actually did flying lead changes) then come to a complete stop. The rider is handed a jousting lance which they run forward with, pop a balloon make a U turn pop a second balloon. After handing off the lance, the rider reverses course takes a half lap, runs forward thru the L shaped obstacle then runs throu the back side of the water ditch so that they have to negotiate a steep decline before coming abruptly to the water.after completing the water obstacle they run thru the end of the of the course.

It was impressive seeing a rider work her horse through his fear of water and into the ditch he jumped! Right into a muddy length of water. He cleared the round nicely.
I can't wait to see tomorrow's events. The competition will involve sworn officers from around the state and their mounts. The event will start at 1pm.The competition will include a mounted firing exhibition.

I strongly suggest wearing a hat. bring some water.

I really enjoyed myself at the event. Come out, support the dedication and hard work of these people that put so much time into training their horse to work as a team with them.
