Tonight the moon's closest approach to the Earth (perigee)coincides with a full moon, so it will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual (about 10% more). This occurs around every 411 days or so. Look up from your Cinco de mayo celebration if you remember :)

This page has an overview and a neat discussion on why the moon seems larger on the horizon than in the sky.

We saw it tonight. Thanks.
A VETERAN Whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including their life". That is HONOR, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it. -Author unknown-

The downside of the "supermoon" last night is the solar eclipse in 2 weeks will not be a Total. It will be an Anular, so at no time will it be safe to look directly at the eclipse. I would have preferred seeing the smallest full moon the other night to enjoy a spectacular Total Solar eclipse in 2 weeks.

Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.
