Downbeat Magazine has awarded its 36th annual student music awards. Drum roll please - the Sutter Middle School Jazz Band won the best middle school Large Jazz Band Ensemble in the nation! Congratulations to Mr. Zimny and the 2012 band, maybe the best kept secret in all of Folsom.

Want to come out and see the current band? They're playing one of their last shows of the year at the Jesuit High School Jazz Festival this Saturday morning. And there's a bunch of videos on YouTube...

That is fantastic!

I remember a few years back being at the Wine and Dine fundraiser. I was in the back, and my eyes ain't what they used to be.

The music was fantastic, so polished and mature.

I told my friend it was hard to believe these were just high-schoolers.

We walked up front to get a better listen, and I was pretty surprised to find that we were listing to the middle-school band. These were 12 and 13 year old kids playing!

I love and appreciate jazz music and musicians, and know the long hours playing and learning and creating. It is a labor of love, to be sure.

These kids are great.

I'm listening while wrapping up work. Good stuff.
