It's time to bring back "Cops on the Beat" again to Old Folsom...This is a win-win situation for all. In talking with many Folsom patrol officers all so far have supported the idea, along with ALL of the residence I have approached. With light rail at our back doors, and break-ins, car thefts, and vandalism on the rise in the historic district we really need cops on the beat that are familiar with the residents, promote police presence, and know what is out of place. With the current policies, the officers don't know where they are going to be from shift to shift. This has left residents, as well as the officers a bit frustrated. When they respond to an insidence one night, and a resident might ask for the police to patrol by again the following night they have to tell the resident they aren't sure where they will be, but they will try to find out who will be in the area and leave word with them. This is a MUST, and will not happen without support. How do you feel about this?

Sure sounds like a good idea, but what are the implementation? They don't know what area they are in because the same cops patrol the whole city. Who's going to fund cops just to walk around our neighbourhood?

I just don't understand the details. Obviously more police patrolling around light rail and watching cars at night is a good thing, but without the details of what it would take to support it this is impossible to stand behind

Good to hear a reply, Cops on the Beat suggestion is not to say actually having the patrol officers on foot, but to have designated areas, or "Beats" they are responsible for patrolling. The concept I had in mind was more of the neighborhood establishing a closer link with the police officers, who in turn are more familiar with the Beat they are on, and what may or may not be out of place. Familiarity would be great. The neighborhood as a whole would really benefit. I think if the city were to be divided into sectors, or beats crime would start to decrease. My hope is if there is enough support, to have a pilot program start out in the historic district, and based on the success could branch out to all other areas of Folsom....

Hard to believe the city doesn't already have our officers assigned to
beats which they can become familiar with over time.

I agree with you.
Moreover, the residents in the old Historic District are ESSENTIAL
to the health of the old Sutter St. district --- which is the IDENTITY
of Folsom.... the drawing card, if you will.

It is essential to keep this residential area viable, attractive, and
SAFE. Otherwise no one will want to come to the Historic Area.

BTW, I met the officer on horseback on Sutter St.
What a deal -- he gets paid to be on a horse all day.

Actually, Folsom is divided into 4 beats which are patrolled by the assignment of the officers to each beat. They're not WALK beats, but patrol beats nonetheless.
