For some reason while reviewing myfolsom this morning I keep getting a pop up warning saying I need a software update.  

 

It does not happen on any other websites, only on myfolsom.com

 

Is this happening to anyone else or just me? Makes no sense... looks like spam or a potential virus.

Yes, I got the same thing last night.  A Google search for "softwareupdater lp" reveals that it is a adware or malware program and gives tips on how to remove it.

Never "update" your software unless you go to the manufacturers site. Even then, watch what you download as many "legitimate" software producers bundle garbage in with their core software. Yes, I'm talking about you Adobe and Microsoft.  When asked to install something, ALWAYS choose custom install so that you can at least have some opportunity to uncheck the "also install this?" boxes and the "make Bing your default search engine" type of garbage.

If you get an unexpected pop up on a web site, whether it tells you that you have won something, or it makes you make a choice about something, do not click anywhere on it (just because an icon says "close" does not mean a thing). Instead, hit cpntrol-alt-delete, bring up your task manager and force close the browser.

Don't just use an antivirus. Get a popup blocker, ad blocker and or a few programs to look for irritating stuff that slips by. Ad Aware is good. So is Spybot. A little more advanced tool is Hijack This. All three of those have a basic free version.

 

Game sites (especially flash games) are a scourge, and I've had problems with both my kids computers from them at various times. Any site that needs to install anything, BEWARE!   Most of the malware is just annoying, but some can cause real problems. PC security is sort of like auto security. If someone really wants to get in, they will find a way. Still, an alarm and locks help deter the opportunists.

Don't fiddle with your registry unless you feel competent to do so. Hijack This is pretty good at finding stuff there that gets dug in.

this pop up disabled my computer for a few minutes. I couldnt even close the web site. Very invasive. It dropped in a file in my drive that was trying to record my passwords from any sites i had used since since last scrub.
