I am not sure what I had before the current Garbage Disposer but Farley had someone put in the current one and it is 1hp.  I see they have 1/3, 1/2, 3/4 and 1hp units and since my just crapped out, wondering what I should get...

I only use it for mostly soft stuff-  no bones, gristle like stuff- but occasionally will get some asparagus, brocholli  or other vegie cut offs, maybe some onion peels or similar that do not make it into the compost bin in the sink...  and softer stuff ...

So it is mostly light duty-but not sure which to get ...

Any suggestions would help---

Cheers

I went with the highest HP unit (within a predefined budget) I could get that minimized plumbing work (replacement, not new install). Over the years, I've found the higher HP units last longer, operate more quietly and work more effectively.

I think my current model is this (has worked quietly well over the past 10 years or so): <again, tried to paste a link but this site won't let me; it's the Evolution Compact>

3/4 is an over the top amount of horsepower. 1 hp is really just for showing off.

You'll also find price is dependent on how well the unit is sound insulated. If you don't tend to run it through the night it might be an opportunity to save money.

Your cheapest solution is to buy exact;y the same model and swap it yourself.  It is super simple if it is the same unit.

I've not found that myself. Do you mean if you need to buy more pipe?  I'd be surprised if it ran more than $5 or so.

I think a 1/2 hp is adequate and a good price point.

Gotta wonder then what the people with the 1hp model are doing? Choppin' up chicken bones in there?

I went w/ higher HP not specifically for the HP (although I knew I wanted more than the contractor special that came with the house). But rather the higher HP models seems to have the features I wanted -- significantly quieter and better built (ie - stainless steel blades that wouldn't rust and corrode in 2 years like the contractor special). But the higher HP does make quick work of rinds, stringy veggie, etc that the prior disposal couldn't handle.

It may be overkill but I don't think it really cost extra for what I wanted to get anyway....
