Folsom, CA – With changing drought conditions, the State Water Resources Control Board approved a resolution that removes its mandatory conservation mandates and allows water agencies to set conservation targets based on local supply and demand. Effective immediately, the City of Folsom is moving from a Stage 3 to Stage 1 conservation level, removing restrictions on day of the week watering.
Under the revised regulations, the City of Folsom can adjust its conservation standards based on available water supplies. In spite of improving conditions, Folsom water customers are encouraged to voluntarily reduce water consumption by 10 percent, compared with 2013 water usage.
Under State Water Resources Control Board regulations, the following restrictions remain in place:
· Water waste is prohibited at all times. Allowing water to run off into a gutter, ditch or drain, or failing to repair a controllable leak is considered water waste.
· Cars can be washed at home if the hose is equipped with a shut-off valve.
· Watering lawns is permitted any day of the week before 10 a.m. or after 10 p.m., with the exception of drip irrigation. Watering lawns or landscaping when it’s raining or within 48 hours or measurable rain is prohibited.
· Hand watering with a hand-held hose, drip irrigation, soaker hose or bucket is permitted any time of day. Using a hose, without a shut-off nozzle, for any purpose is prohibited.
· Washing driveways and sidewalks for purposes other than an immediate health and safety need is restricted.
“Folsom water customers have done a remarkable job of conserving water during the drought, and achieved a 35 percent water use reduction,” said Environmental and Water Resources Director Marcus Yasutake. “During the drought we learned a lot about how to use water efficiently to maintain our landscapes. While mandatory conservation restrictions have lifted, I encourage Folsom’s water customers to continue to use water efficiently.”
Folsom water customers can track current water use and 2013 water consumption by reviewing Folsom utility bills or by downloading the City of Folsom’s water conservation app Dropcountr.
