Winco Shopping Carts

I was shopping at Winco last night. I noticed that the shopping cart had a sign on it: "Shopping cart wheels will lock if taken off Winco property" -- or something like that.
I thought, how can this be? How does the shopping cart know if it's on Winco property? The shopping cart appeared to be a normal, low-tech shopping cart -- no radio transmitter, no obvious lock or brakes, etc.
Of course, I was dying to walk it out of the parking lot to see what would happen...
What do you think? Is the warning on the cart true -- or is it just an empty threat? Anyone willing to try this and report back to us?

I'm guessing its just an empty threat.....don't know why someone would need to steal a shopping cart - what the heck would you do with it?

There are anti-theft systems for shopping carts.
I found this quote online: "The system is similar to one used to prevent dogs from straying from their owners' yards. Only, instead of administering an electric shock via a collar, a wire buried under the parking lot's perimeter activates a special front wheel that Carttronics fits to each cart in a supermarket's fleet, at a cost of about $75 per cart. After locking, the wheel can only be released by a supermarket staff member using an electronic resetting device."
Who steals carts? Kids who want to ride or crash them, homeless folks use them to carry their stuff, and others use them to get their groceries home. Also, small store owners may steal them and take the name plates off of them, so their own custumers can use them.

What were you expecting? A big old PC hanging off one of the wheels?

Try to take it out of the parking lot and go to jail.

If you were really determined you could still get one out of there, we just lifted up the back of the cart to get it to our car, but it was annoying.

The Supreme Court just made several decisions that will change this nation significantly and there is more interest in shopping carts.

Hey with their eminent domain allowing cities to take anyones land for ANY purpose, lack of support on restraining orders from out Police and other rulings-
and the real estate bubble as well as all the jobsd going to India and China- and the lack of gabage pick up- we could all be on the street next week and we MUST have working shopping carts---- You understand ????

Thats probably because most of the regulars who would have normally responded to that stuff have been banned or censored to the point where they won't bother to post on it anymore....I've noticed this place has become fairly sedated since that stuff happened.

Agreed. Living in a Redevelopment District (blighted) just became more interesting with the eminent domain ruling. Those shopping carts might come in handy after you get "fair market value" for your Historic District house and can't afford to live anywhere else in Folsom.
On the bright side, at least Winco won't be able to have the police enforce a restraining order against you from coming on their property to steal the carts.
