Ok, this is just one of those curiousities that I would really like to know the answer to.

I was shopping at Winco last night. I noticed that the shopping cart had a sign on it: "Shopping cart wheels will lock if taken off Winco property" -- or something like that.

I thought, how can this be? How does the shopping cart know if it's on Winco property? The shopping cart appeared to be a normal, low-tech shopping cart -- no radio transmitter, no obvious lock or brakes, etc.

Of course, I was dying to walk it out of the parking lot to see what would happen...

What do you think? Is the warning on the cart true -- or is it just an empty threat? Anyone willing to try this and report back to us?

LOL! I have seen that sign there too and wondered the same....I looked at the carts and don't see a way that it could really work...maybe I missed something - maybe its just a fabricated story to keep people honest.

I'm guessing its just an empty threat.....don't know why someone would need to steal a shopping cart - what the heck would you do with it?

Nope it's true. There's a chip embedded on the wheel base that will communicate with the receiver (in store). Once the frequency is lost, the cart will explode and send thousands of sharp metal objects in every direction. Be very careful.

There are anti-theft systems for shopping carts.

I found this quote online: "The system is similar to one used to prevent dogs from straying from their owners' yards. Only, instead of administering an electric shock via a collar, a wire buried under the parking lot's perimeter activates a special front wheel that Carttronics fits to each cart in a supermarket's fleet, at a cost of about $75 per cart. After locking, the wheel can only be released by a supermarket staff member using an electronic resetting device."

Who steals carts? Kids who want to ride or crash them, homeless folks use them to carry their stuff, and others use them to get their groceries home. Also, small store owners may steal them and take the name plates off of them, so their own custumers can use them.

What were you expecting? A big old PC hanging off one of the wheels? rofl.gif

Its true. I actually had one lock up on me. It was the first week they were open and we were parked at the very far end of the parking lot because of the crowds. We got about 10 feet from our car when the back wheels locked up. If you look at them you can see there is a kind of brake on the wheel, it came down.

If you were really determined you could still get one out of there, we just lifted up the back of the cart to get it to our car, but it was annoying.

It is true. I know the President/CEO of KartSaver (http://www.kartsaver...ts/contact.html), a company that designs the systems that lock up, although his company may or may not be the one that makes the carts for Winco. KartSaver has other technologies, including a sensor at the height of the bottom of the cart to signal the checker that groceries are on the bottom rack.

Wow, what a fascinating discussions. Not the topic at all, but that there have been so many replies.

The Supreme Court just made several decisions that will change this nation significantly and there is more interest in shopping carts.

Hey with their eminent domain allowing cities to take anyones land for ANY purpose, lack of support on restraining orders from out Police and other rulings-
and the real estate bubble as well as all the jobsd going to India and China- and the lack of gabage pick up- we could all be on the street next week and we MUST have working shopping carts---- You understand ????

Thats probably because most of the regulars who would have normally responded to that stuff have been banned or censored to the point where they won't bother to post on it anymore....I've noticed this place has become fairly sedated since that stuff happened.

Yes, there are wheels that lock, the front right wheel has a transceiver in it that locks after it crosses a perimeter line of cable that they layed. My friends and I once found a broken wheel laying in the parking lot and took it home and cut it in half.

Agreed. Living in a Redevelopment District (blighted) just became more interesting with the eminent domain ruling. Those shopping carts might come in handy after you get "fair market value" for your Historic District house and can't afford to live anywhere else in Folsom.

On the bright side, at least Winco won't be able to have the police enforce a restraining order against you from coming on their property to steal the carts.
