My two boys will be going to Gold Ridge in the fall (1st grade & 3rd grade) (3 weeks....yikes the summer has flown by!)...anyway, I had a few questions for anyone who has experience with Gold Ridge.
1. Teachers: the good and the bad....any experiences you would care to share re: good teachers, or ones you have had issues with? I have heard there will be a 3rd/4th grade combo class....any experiences with this? I am a bit nervous about my son being in a combo class....
2. Lunches: What do most people do for the kid's lunches? I have looked at the posted menu and can't really tell much about the quality and healthy aspects of the lunches. Do most students buy or bring their lunches? If they bring their lunches, are their any tips for what types of things to pack and how to get variety in there? Are they allowed to bring peanut butter and jelly? (the private school we were at did not allow peanut butter).
3. After School Clubs: What is the situation with after school clubs? Do they have any? How much do they cost? What has your experience been with them? Do you let the kids walk from their class to the club or do you 'escort' them to the club after school?
4. Field Trips: Are there any? How many, what can I expect here?
5. After school care at the racqet club: Anyone use this? I have heard quite a few kids walk over to the club for after school care/homework club, etc.....any experiences with this?
6. Anything else you may want to offer would be appreciated.
thanks!

My daughter will be a 5th grader at Gold Ridge and my other starting 1st grade (her first year at GR). I love this school!!! I put some answers below your questions... hopefully this helps.
1. Teachers: the good and the bad....any experiences you would care to share re: good teachers, or ones you have had issues with? I have heard there will be a 3rd/4th grade combo class....any experiences with this? I am a bit nervous about my son being in a combo class....
All teachers we've had have been fantastic. Of course, some kids do better with certain types of teachers than others, so it's hard to predict how your boys will do. I have not heard of a 3/4 combo class... actually that would surprise me. They do have/had a K/1 and 1/2 combo and I believe a 4/5.
2. Lunches: What do most people do for the kid's lunches? I have looked at the posted menu and can't really tell much about the quality and healthy aspects of the lunches. Do most students buy or bring their lunches? If they bring their lunches, are their any tips for what types of things to pack and how to get variety in there? The lunches you can buy there are so-so. They offer the main item and a trip to the salad bar which has fresh fruit and veggies. Most kids bring lunch I would suspect. PB is not off limits.
3. After School Clubs: What is the situation with after school clubs? Do they have any? How much do they cost? What has your experience been with them? Do you let the kids walk from their class to the club or do you 'escort' them to the club after school?
They do offer many clubs, but there is always a parent that coordinates this. If not, it doesn't happen. I do know the mother that did it last year will not be doing it this year. Hopefully they will have a volunteer. They have had chess, track and field, art, etc. Very good clubs. My daughter attended many. The price is around $20, maybe less, unless it's offered by an outside vendor (ie, KidzArt). Most clubs are for grade 2 and over. The club is usually in a specific class room and the kids go on their own. You'll find out more soon after school starts once they line them up.
4. Field Trips: Are there any? How many, what can I expect here?
Depends on the grade. You'll likely find out at back to school night.
5. After school care at the racqet club: Anyone use this? I have heard quite a few kids walk over to the club for after school care/homework club, etc.....any experiences with this?
My daughter has since she turned 7. You have to be 7 years old...club restriction. It's fantastic! Many, many kids walk over from GR. You have to be a club member, but there is no additional charge for the afterschool care.
6. Additional
There is a new principal this year... he came over from Russell Ranch. I've heard great things about him from RR parents and GR staff.

Traceyl pretty much answered all of your questions about Goldridge. My children attended the school during the 2006/2007 school year, and we were very happy with the school. I know the new principal from when my children attended Empire Oaks, where he taught, and again this past year at Russell Ranch, where he also taught. He's a good guy, and I am sorry he is leaving, as I would have loved for my third-grade son to have him as teacher. If it weren't for the school district rezoning, we would have happily stayed at Goldridge.

I heard they had a cutback in teachers and some of the teachers who were there last year are going to another school in the district.

Both of my childrean attend Gold Ridge from K-5 and we have nothing but great things to say about it. My kids had wounderful teachers. I never really liked combo classes but if the teacher
does it right and they have a good group of kids it can work. My kids both had Mr English and he was GREAT!!! The 5th grade team there is really good also. The middle school can always tell the kids that came from GR.

There was staffing movement across the district. Teachers who have been around for a long time are likely to still be there.

They are!! Both of my boys were lucky to have been there when Mr Sabin was still there. My youngest had him for his last year at GR so we were blessed by having him as one of the teachers. Mrs. Strickland and Mr. Smith are Great! I have no knowlege of the newest member but I'm sure she is good and fits in well with them. Have a fun year.
