I need your help in spreading the word. As you may know, I’ve been working on a forum to address the growing problem of drug and alcohol abuse by kids as young as 11 here in Folsom. In recent months, kids have been caught with, or hospitalized from using, alcohol, oxycontin, morphine, ecstasy, heroin, and even prescription drugs from their parents’ medicine cabinets.
It’s been a secret well-kept by kids, and by some well-meaning parents. The time has come, however, for parents to get informed and take charge. We may be good parents, and keep our kids busy and supervised, but they still have to go to school, and still will go places after school and to sleepovers. Someone, somewhere, is going to offer them drugs.
If you or someone you know has kids who are or soon will be middle school age through high school, it is very important that you get the information and resources to keep your children safe.
That's why we've created the P.E.P. Forum.
Included among the speakers and panelist at the event will be Folsom Police, a parent who’s going through the hell of losing one of her kids to drugs, a kid in recovery, school official, and a drug counselor. You’ll come away knowing what to do and how to do it.
It’s not quite as much fun as going to a soccer game, but far more important.
Here’s the official release from the city:
Parents: Could you use a little PEP Talk? The city of Folsom will be presenting a Parent Empowerment Program Discussion at the Folsom Community Center hosted by Cristina Mendonsa Channel 10 news anchor and Folsom parent. The topic – teen drug use. Drug use among teens is a national problem and we are not immune to it in Folsom. Your kids experience peer pressure and will be exposed to drugs. The PEP talk will be an open discussion about drugs use among local youth and what you need to know to keep your children safe. Hear from local youth, police and experts about what steps you can take to recognize and prevent drug use. Be proactive and mark your calendar for Thursday, September 25 from 7 – 8:30 p.m. at the Folsom Community Center. You may call the Folsom Parks and Recreation Dept at 355-7285 for further info.
Please help spread the word.

Done. Please do cut and paste as well, as this post is more detailed than the flyer.

If you have pre-teen through teen kids, you should attend.
You need to know what kinds of drugs choices your kids are facing regarding drug abuse in Folsom, how to recognize the warning signs, and how to protect your kids.

I'll be there tonight to support the entire cause. Is the forum too sophisticated for an eight year old to attend?

Thanks Lex!
Please tell spread the word if you can.
The subject matter is pretty serious, and may go over his/her head, and it may not be very entertaining, but nothing inappropriate.

It is one thing to talk about drug use here on MyFolsom and another to hear it out of the mouths of Folsom police, parents, school administration and an actual addict that were present in tonights forum.
A pretty interesting twist was hearing about the Friday afternoon Target crowd being scoped out and some actually busted for drugs....pretty scary knowing these are Middle School kids.
Christinia Mendosa was a great hostess and charming and lovely as always. She makes Folsom proud!
I'm looking forward to more such events and hope we can work together to raise awareness and help raise kids who WANT to be drug free.

It was great to see you. Thanks for coming out.
We plan on doing more of these, and hopefully, the 200+ in attendance will help spread the word.
