We have to decide between two insurance companies right now and I am 20 weeks pregnant. I have been going to one doctor (whom I do not care for) and I would have to go to Mercy San Juan for the delivery. The other choice is Kaiser Roseville for delivery. It's WAY cheaper for us to have the baby with the San Juan doctor/hospital/insurance vs Kaiser. But I have heard mixed reviews about the place. Can anyone here help me? We had our other child at Mercy Folsom and LOVED it there.

Do you have to go to Mercy San Juan because that's where your Dr. works out of? If so, can you go to Mercy Folsom and have the on-call Dr deliver? That would be my choice.
Or labor at home as long as possible and show up to Mercy Folsom when it's too late to be sent somewhere else

I just had a friend give birth and she chose Mercy Folsom over Mercy San Juan despite it being a longer drive. She did so becuase Folsom is much less crowded. More of a rural feeling. San Juan is a zoo! The one plus is that San Juan has a NICU in case anything goes wrong, Folsom does not.
I personally am choosing Sutter Roseville for my october delivery.

You might want to check with your insurance company before you "plan" something like that. Contrary to popular belief, labor & delivery is NOT considered an emergency. If you have an HMO plan & are part of an organization such as CalPERs, the hospitalization could very well be denied for services at an out of network facility. IF there are not complicating factors. I've seen it happen many times.Or labor at home as long as possible and show up to Mercy Folsom when it's too late to be sent somewhere else

It does seem very unusual to me if you choose to be part of an IPA medical group (usually the case with HMO's & a big push right now for cost containment), such as Mercy/Dignity Health vs Kaiser, I would think that you could go to any facility within their network. Do you know why there is a restriction? If it were me, I'd ask, and raise a big fuss. That's total bs.

I can only speak from personal experience, but I highly recommed Kaiser Roseville. I just had my baby there on July 4th, 5 weeks early, and it was a great experience. I was admitted into the hospital rather quickly as baby was in a huge hurry, but the staff handled it very professionally and efficiently. Baby needed to be in the NICU since she was 1 day shy of 35 weeks, and needed a little support with her body temperature. All of the staff there was amazing! The NICU nurses are incredibly knowledgable and went above and beyond to make our experience the best it could be. We were sent home with bags of extras (free diapers, formula, and even free pump kits as my husband kept losing the parts) I was discharged after only 1 day, but baby needed to stay for 2.5 days so Kaiser had "boarding" rooms that they allowed us to stay in free of charge until we could take her home with us. As this is my first baby, I do not have any experience with any other hospitals, but I can assure you Kaiser Roseville was awesome, not to mention brand new and very clean!
