This morning I went to the bagel place next to Kinkos, I think the name is Main Street Bagels.  I ordered a onion bagel with cream cheese and the total was $2.54. I thought it seems a little high but I was in a hurry to go to work and starving.  So, I give the lady the atm card and she slides it through her machine and then hands me the receipt paper to sign.  As I glance over the receipt, I notice the amount she slid it for $2.84.  I then asked her why the amount was different from the amount that she rung up on the cash register, she replied with " atm fee".  I then asked her where that was posted, and she said it wasn't.  I asked her to refund my card and she can keep the bagel.  She wouldn't refund my card, but instead gave me the cash back.  I am shocked by the idea that she thought it was alright to charge people more than what the goods costs without having any notification as to atm fees.  Furthermore, she was not apologetic or nice about.  I now know why this place is always empty... poor customer service and their bagels are nothing close to Posh Bagels! I wish there was a Noah's Bagels or Posh Bagels on my way to work instead.  Definitely not going back to this bagel place....

Most banks (& credit unions) charge a point of service fee (about 30-35 cents, at least as of when I was still using my ATM card 3 years ago). That's one of the reasons why I stopped using it. I know a lot of banks have added even more fees in the past year.

The vendor usually has no say so in this matter. And it's really not their responsibility to tell you. It's the bank's responsibility.

Perhaps you should check with your bank to see if they have changed their policies.

omg, THIS PLACE has been doing this for the last couple of years and it doesn't stop there. They charge us a different amt each time for the SAME exact order. We don't go there anymore, but when you ask they make some excuse and they need to be audited by the Sac Tax Board. PErhaps you should complain. I thought about it. I know they own another store in Elk Grove I believe. They have NEVER mentioned an ATM fee when I was there.
They are about to close in my opinion. Last time I was there, our bagels were stale and they had very little product early in the am. Also, my son got sick after eating there.
Americans, don't just come in one color or race.

Actually the vendors are the one's that charge a fee. The fee is passed directly to the customer via the retail operator of the equipment. The bank, charges you a separate fee for actually uses an atm machine ( stand alone or actually at a bank). Some banks get stupid and tellyou they will charge up to $5 to use an atm machine that does not have their company name on it.

But the retailers are passing down a direct fee they get from using the online debit services in their establishments. Those fees can be anywhere from .25 to .75, in my experience
